Favourite campaign of 2021 and why?

I think Aldi’s recent Christmas campaign is a powerful one. It’s not overly complicated, but it has an important message: to be kind. Following the backlash that the John Lewis Christmas advert has received for using a Black boy as its leading star, being kind is something that unfortunately many people seem to forget about when they don’t see what “they want” on screen. Whether it’ll do anything to change people’s views I’m not sure, but it’s great to see brands like Aldi acknowledge the problem and tackle it openly—and they even used Marcus Rashford in the ad, who has himself been the victim of much abuse in recent years. Also a reminder that the most powerful campaigns can have the simplest meaning behind them.

Who is your communicator of the year?

Zaid Al-Qassab, the CMO and D&I Director of Channel 4. The way Channel 4 strives to put on inclusive and diverse shows that represent our UK society is clearly down to his passion and drive for greater representation, and few TV channels get it quite as right as Channel 4.

Favourite comfort food?

My mum’s dauphinoise potato gratin. Unbeatable. No one does it better than she makes it.

Person of the year?

Munya Chawawa. If you don’t know who he is, you need to look him up! This guy has brought us endless lols over the pandemic, and he’s held our Tory government to account better than our shadow cabinet. His way with words, his creativity, and his ability to hijack a news story is something we as PR professionals can all learn a thing or two from. Absolutely sensational.

Film you have watched more times than any other?

I’m not really a film person but I love a cheesy romcom or cringe comedy film, so probably Bridesmaids or Mean Girls.

Song you can’t resist dancing to?

Any song by Beyonce.

Event you are most looking forward to in the next 12 months?

Going on a proper holiday, it’s been a long while since I’ve been abroad! And also, anything to do with The Xec. — continuing to learn from the wonderful trainers, and organising what will hopefully be an amazing event in June next year.
