Namrata Acharya is an award-winning journalist from India, currently pursuing her PhD at City, University of London. Her research is about community media and its role in promoting transformative climate justice in India. It examines how community media challenges the dominant paradigms of climate communication and fosters a bottom-up approach, a transformative process, to climate justice. She aims to experiment with the concept of ‘action-oriented research’ in journalism, connecting theories and their practical implementation in the field.

Previously, for nearly twelve years, she worked as an assistant editor with Business Standard newspaper, followed by a short stint as a freelance journalist in India. As a journalist, she wrote on subjects like business & finance, development, and climate change. Namrata’s climate reporting has won the C R Irani Award for Environment Reporting and was shortlisted for the Kurt Schork Memorial Fund award by the Thomson Reuters Foundation. She has received multiple journalism fellowships and scholarships, including the World Press Institute Fellowship, Media Ambassador India-Germany fellowship, Thomson Reuters scholarship for business and finance writing, Erasmus Mundus scholarship in Journalism, and a fully funded research scholarship to pursue PhD at City.
