Scarlett wrote and edited for leading business publications

Scarlett Zhao is a PR professional with experience in technology, media and retail sectors. In February 2020, she transferred to London from Beijing to join the International Corporate Comms – EMEA team. In her current role, Scarlett drives customer communications, content creation and social media in the European region. She has worked in Alibaba’s comms operation for six years.

Before her career in PR, Scarlett worked as a journalist following the study of journalism and communication. Fluent in English and Mandarin, Scarlett wrote and edited for leading business publications such as Bloomberg Businessweek.

From her career as a PR professional and a journalist, Scarlett has established great knowledge of the business landscape in China, especially in the tech sector and she has shown success working cross-culturally.

Favourite campaign of 2021 and why?


The CHANGEDESTINY campaign was started at least 6 years ago but this year SK-II enlarged the scale of it. The company launched a film studio division and content hub in March, dedicated to tackling social pressures impacting women today through film and storytelling. Throughout all these years, the message remains the same: destiny is not a matter of choice but a matter of chance. Sounds simple, right? But I rarely see a consumer brand stick up for one single message and keep making thought-provoking content that triggers wide discussion in a society every year.

Who is your communicator of the year?

Greta Thunberg.
Although not the most polished speaker (especially as she is not communicating in her first language for the majority of public events), Thunberg never fails to get her message across in a very authentic way. She is a powerful and forceful communicator, and her message is more prescient now than ever before.

Favourite comfort food?

Korean stews

Person of the year?

Marcus Rashford.
Rashford continues to inspire public figures to fight for causes they truly believe in. His story is a story of courage and determination to succeed, despite significant challenges. Most importantly, he has not forgotten those struggles and dedicates so much to help others in need. He does so despite the animosity shown to him in certain sections of social media and other outlets. He has not stopped with the successes already achieved. He keeps going and is a force for good in society.

The 2022 Winter Olympics.
I was a volunteer at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and hopefully I will be at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing as part of Alibaba Group. And also, I get to visit my family after 2 years.
